The U.S. Census Bureau released data showing construction spending in the water and wastewater sectors declined from June 2011 to June 2012, but has improved month-to-month since February 2012 (see Chart of the Month).
- Water and wastewater spending were down 2.2 percent and 8.5 percent, respectively.
- The only segment of the water and wastewater sectors to improve year-over-year was wastewater line and drain construction spending, which increased 9.1 percent. These trends benefitted the stock prices of companies such as Aegion, which saw an 8-percent jump in August.
